24 Hour Crisis Stabilization

Partial Hospitalization - Adults and Adolescents

Have you recently left an inpatient treatment program and don’t know where to go next? Do you feel like you don’t need inpatient care but could still benefit from highly intensive support and treatment?

Attending a partial hospitalization program (PHP) may be the right choice for you. In 2022, 846,000 Texans received treatment for a substance use disorder, and 3,899,000 received treatment for a mental health disorder. These numbers include all treatment levels, from traditional therapy to PHP.

At SUN Behavioral Health Houston, we offer PHP because we’ve seen how it changes lives.

What We Treat: Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

Whether you are seeking mental health or substance use disorder treatment, SUN Behavioral Health Houston provides treatment for both.

A substance use disorder occurs when a substance you are consuming has taken control of your life. Perhaps you have tried to stop taking it but have discovered it was challenging, and you returned to use. A PHP program can provide you with the additional support and resources necessary to prevent this from occurring. Some substance use disorders we treat include alcohol use disorder, meth use disorder, heroin use disorder, and benzodiazepine use disorder.

Mental health disorders are psychological conditions that impact your well-being. With proper treatment, many people can improve their quality of life.

How We Treat: Partial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a highly intensive outpatient treatment program in which people participate during the day, 5 days a week, and return home each night. This level of treatment is suitable for people who need more intensive care but do not need complete hospitalization. They may require stabilization and intensive treatment, but their symptoms are not an imminent danger to themselves and others.

Many people who participate in our PHP program come from inpatient care settings. In these cases, they are transitioning from inpatient, where they stay at the hospital for the entirety of their treatment, to outpatient, where they participate in treatment during the day while returning to their homes at night.

People participating in SUN’s PHP will learn new emotional coping skills and reintegrate into their family and community. At the end of their time with PHP, they are usually ready for lower levels of outpatient care, such as our intensive outpatient program (IOP).

PHP is unsuitable for anyone who is actively a danger to themselves or others. In these cases, inpatient care is the most suitable.

How We Provide Partial Hospitalization at SUN Behavioral Health Houston

Our facility offers PHP to adults and adolescents, who meet Monday through Friday. Adults have access to both mental health and substance use disorder treatment while attending our program. For teen PHP,  we only offer mental health disorder treatment.

Partial Hospitalization Program: What Is Covered?

During PHP treatment at SUN Behavioral Health Houston, you will experience a variety of therapy groups and have a team of psychiatrists who will provide you with a comprehensive medication management plan. Our team will consider your experiences, doctors' insights, treatment history, and previous assessments during your evaluation when customizing your treatment plan. Here are some therapies you may experience during your PHP treatment at SUN Behavioral Health.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

During PHP, everyone participating in SUN Behavioral Health Houston will experience some form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Depending on your treatment plan, your team may combine it with other options. CBT helps people identify and change harmful thoughts or behaviors into less harmful ones. When you participate in CBT, you will learn how to:

  • Identify harmful thoughts and concerns in your life
  • Change beliefs, thoughts, and emotions from harmful ones to positive ones
  • Explore alternative strategies that allow you to cope with current concerns

Coping Skills Training

During coping skills training, you will learn how to cope when your risk factors or similar situations occur, allowing you to experience those situations outside of treatment and practice what to do. Your counselor will also teach you social skills that will enable you to reduce conflict in your personal and work relationships. When these skills are combined, you will experience increased self-confidence, which will help your recovery journey after completing PHP.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)

A wellness recovery action plan, or WRAP, is a system that helps you understand the wellness techniques necessary for your long-term recovery. This treatment allows you to learn and discover tools to create and maintain wellness. Some of the things you’ll learn in WRAP include:
  • How to develop a daily plan to keep you on track with your goals
  • How to identify circumstances or situations that might prevent or derail your recovery
  • How to move forward from those circumstances
  • How to find support and stay in control, even if you experience a crisis

How Long Do I Need to Attend a Partial Hospitalization Program?

How long someone stays in a partial hospitalization program at our treatment facility can vary. Every person is different when it comes to their recovery from a mental health concern, substance use disorder, or both. Some people only need a few weeks, while others need longer. It depends on the type of treatment you are receiving and how well you are progressing. As you participate in treatment, your timeline may change depending on your progress.

Partial Hospitalization for Adults

Our adult PHP is for individuals over 18 years old. Adults can benefit from either our mental health group or our co-occurring disorder group. The co-occurring disorder group is best for individuals who have both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. During treatment, people will attend group therapy sessions and learn stress management and life development skills. By the time you leave SUN Behavioral Houston, you will have received aftercare planning to guide you as you continue your recovery journey.

Partial Hospitalization for Adolescents

Our adolescent program has day and evening options for those between 13 and 17 years old. Teens who attend our day program complete their treatment at the facility. However, our evening PHP program is available in person or virtually. Some signs your teen might benefit from a PHP program include:

  • Changes in school performance
  • Excessive fear, sadness, or aggression
  • Changes in sleep habits
  • Consuming or hiding substances
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Intense fears regarding their appearance

Is PHP Treatment for Adolescents Different Than It Is for Adults?

In many ways, teens receive the same skills and techniques as adults. However, teen care is approached differently for multiple reasons. For example, adolescents are still in school, so academic programs are included to provide structure and help them continue their education while in treatment. Adults won’t typically need academic support, but we still focus on life skills training for them, including vocational and financial education.

Teens may not be willing participants initially. Many times, parents or guardians may compel their teens to attend needed treatment, which may result in them not wanting to participate. When a teen actively participates in their treatment, they have a higher chance of recovering. Because of this, it is essential to approach adolescent care differently than adults, who are often more present in their decision to receive treatment. We meet your teen where they are and have patience when addressing their concerns to encourage them to participate.

While teens can experience the same concerns as adults, they can also have unique factors that come with adolescence. These concerns may include social media, bullying, or uncertainty about their future. These factors often require a different approach to finding healing.

Benefits of Partial Hospitalization

Partial hospitalization can provide many benefits, balancing the flexibility of outpatient treatment with the intensity of inpatient care. For example, PHP provides a structured support system that includes medical professionals, therapists, support groups, and more. Medical professionals monitor your health and medications, while our therapists and support groups can assist with any symptoms you have associated with a mental health or substance use disorder.

PHP also provides more flexibility than an inpatient treatment program. While it is still structured and takes up most of the day, unlike inpatient programs, PHP allows you or your loved one to return home each night after they have completed treatment during the day.

PHP also teaches people the skills and tools they need to maintain stability. These skills often include mindfulness, accountability, and stress reduction, which can prevent someone from returning to substance use or worsening symptoms of a mental health disorder.
