24 Hour Crisis Care

Telehealth Services

In this uncertain time, at-home mental health services and evaluations are more important than ever. While the general public is experiencing worsening mental health, many of us need to talk to someone and get help.

Having a mental health condition is common. At any point in time, more than half of us will be diagnosed with a mental illness in our lifetimes.

You can now get help for a mental health condition or substance use disorder remotely.

Now that there is a greater need for telehealth services, it might be time to consider a free consultation through SUN Behavioral Houston to get a better idea of what you’re struggling with and what services you could benefit from.

The best part is that you can now do all of this without leaving the safety of your home. We are offering online screenings that can be scheduled 24/7.

However, if you are hesitant about online therapy or treatment sessions, also known as telepsychiatry services, it’s important to look into telehealth and its benefits first.

What are Telehealth Benefits?

Telehealth is the use of digital technology, such as a mobile device or computer, for healthcare services remotely. This can include virtual appointments, video conferencing, text reminders, apps, etc.

As our society relies more heavily on the use of technology, telehealth sessions are becoming popular as a convenient option for our increasingly busy lives.

The benefits of using telehealth services include:

  • Convenience
  • Accessibility to healthcare (especially for people with limited access to transportation)
  • Support for those who are managing a condition
  • Better coordination of healthcare services
  • Comfort and safety of staying at home (keeping in line with social distancing)
  • You don’t run the risk of running into somebody you know, which can allow for greater privacy
  • Communication can be less intimidating online, especially for younger people
  • You aren’t limited by geography when choosing a doctor or therapist

While anyone can enjoy the benefits of telehealth, there are certain groups of people who should especially take advantage of telehealth services. These groups of people include:

  • Those with limited access to healthcare. This could be due to illness, physical disability, geography, or restricted access to transportation.
  • Those with other pressing responsibilities. This could include school, work, or child care.
  • Those with restrictions due to mental health.

Is Telemedicine or Telehealth as Effective as Regular Visits?

Research regarding telehealth is fairly recent. However, the studies that have been done are promising and show that telehealth is effective.

Studies found that telephone use and telemonitoring vital signs for heart failure lessened the risk of being hospitalized and of death while increasing quality of life.

Another study found that telehealth for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective for both anxiety and depression disorders. CBT is when negative thought patterns are identified and addressed during therapy. This reinforces that telemental health and behavioral health care is effective via telehealth services.

Telehealth consultations were found to result in better clinical outcomes for wound care, some chronic conditions, and psychiatry. Standard health care services, as well as psychiatric care, can benefit from HIPAA compliant telehealth services.

Get the Telehealth Solutions you Need

SUN Behavioral Houston has multiple telehealth solutions for whatever circumstance you’re going through.

Our admissions process starts with a free, virtual consultation with an admissions specialist to determine what course of mental health care treatment would be best for you.

To set up a free consultation to get the help you need:

  • Fill out a patient information form easily on our website.
  • Request a date and time for your consultation and describe your situation. An email confirmation will verify that we got your request.
  • Wait for our call from us to confirm your appointment shortly after we receive your information.
  • A SUN specialist will reach out to you at the time of your appointment for a video chat and consultation.

We also offer telehealth outpatient services. Once your needs are established during your consultation, your course of treatment will be determined on an individual basis. Some of our outpatient programs can be done virtually. These include:

  1. Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): includes up to six hours of programming a day, five days a week. This allows you to have a structured program, usually after inpatient care, while staying at home. Groups focus on CBT, coping skills, and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). WRAP helps you understand wellness techniques and prevent relapse.
  2. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): IOPs require three hours of clinical programming for 3-5 days a week. IOPs usually follow PHP. IOPs include a daily process group, cognitive therapy, and WRAP.

It’s important to note that group topics will differ based on the participant's needs. You can expect facilitated breaks during the day. The programs might include psychotherapy, medication management, nursing education, activity therapy, and academics (if in school).

SUN specialists can help fill out FMLA paperwork and accommodate patient employee assistance programs (EAPs).

After the outpatient program, aftercare will be established to continue therapy and medication management.
