Adult Outpatient Behavioral Health Services

At SUN Behavioral Health in Houston, TX, our adult outpatient services provide structured, evidence-based treatment through two key programs: the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). These programs offer flexible support for individuals managing mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and co-occurring conditions—without requiring an overnight stay.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is ideal for adults stepping down from inpatient care or those needing more intensive treatment to prevent hospitalization. Patients attend group therapy five days per week, focusing on:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Coping skills development
  • WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) for relapse prevention
  • Medication management by our psychiatric team

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

IOP is designed for individuals transitioning from PHP or those who need structured care beyond traditional outpatient services. Patients attend five group sessions per week, which include:

  • Daily process groups
  • Cognitive therapy
  • WRAP-focused relapse prevention

Outpatient treatment is ideal for adults seeking support while maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities. Care is customized following an initial assessment, and services are delivered by licensed professionals in a trauma-informed environment. Treatment may include:

  • Psychiatric and medication support
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Life skills and stress management
  • Mindfulness and physical wellness strategies
  • Aftercare planning and support groups

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Adolescents

PHP is an ideal next step for adolescents transitioning from inpatient care or for those requiring a higher level of support than traditional outpatient services. PHP allows young people to receive intensive treatment during the day while returning home in the evenings to a safe, supportive environment.

Program highlights:
  • Structured programming up to five days a week, typically five to six hours per day
  • Evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Ongoing psychiatric oversight and medication management
  • Emphasis on academic support, peer interaction, and family engagement
  • Comprehensive assessments and individualized discharge planning

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Adolescents

IOP is designed for adolescents who are stepping down from PHP or who need more support than once-weekly outpatient therapy can provide. This program offers flexible, focused care while allowing participants to maintain their regular school and home routines.

Program Highlights:
  • Three group therapy sessions per day, three days per week
  • Focus on symptom management, relapse prevention, and emotional regulation
  • Continued psychiatric care and progress monitoring
  • Integration of family therapy and caregiver support when appropriate
